Is a reflection of Stromae’s idea of the relationship he was not able to have with his own father. The Idyllic family setting matched with all the other father/ son and mother/daughter couples working in sync, while Stromae’s father remains statuesque. A physical reminder of an absent father. This song explores Stromae’s own relationship with his father as well as the fear he has that he may become his father.

G Grossman

G.Grossman creates fantastical scenes with their use of colour and form, the shapes created by the figures and backgrounds seem to flow seamlessly into one another.

Grossman’s use of colour though out their work is wonderful. The use of softer colours fading with both traditional and digital technique in contrast to the bold and vivid colours creates completely different atmospheres and settings for each scene depending on the message Grossman wants to portray.

Stacey Rozich

On her Website it states that “Her work draws inspiration from a broad spectrum of cultural references, building scenarios pulled from a realm steeped in indigenous and contemporary symbolism. Rozich creates a parable for present day built on situational vignettes that are imagined through the lens of familiar fictional archetypes.

Deeply rooted in cultural tradition and ritual, these allegorical accounts join ancestral folklore with elements of modernity and surrealism. Influence is taken from travel, world textiles, childhood memories and television.”

You really see this mix of surrealism, children book like illustration and cultural art within her work. Her use of colour and pattern is very well thought out. And she has this ability of making her work look so easily put together, with the use of collage even though its all must have been meticulously thought out. Her work contains highly detailed characters that all seem to have their own enrapturing story waiting to be told.

Madéleine Flores

Madéleine’s work varies from the folkish quick ink sketch comics portraying one of her mothers old superstitions to humours comics that address things such as body types and an ongoing comic about the Greatest Warrior who goes around slaying monsters (when she want to) and looking fabulous.

Madéleine Flores work explores issues such as gender stereotypes without (seemingly) even meaning to. The Greatest Warrior for example is a strong independent warrior who expresses a feminine identity and is not afraid of being feminine. Something most media outlets criticise a hero for mewing demonizing femininity so much it becomes synonymous with weakness.

Happy Tree Friends

Happy Tree Friends is a very morbid cartoon that masquerades as something you would let toddlers watch.
It starts off with a very cheerful title sequence aimed to bring a sense of comfort a familiarity to the viewer. Making them believe that it’s like any other cutesy child’s cartoon they set up typical situations, like a character afraid of flighting going on a flight, which you expect to be simply acknowledged and resolved within the space of the episode. However instead the episode ends with multiple characters disembowel and mutilated screaming in agony for a quick and painless death. (which some get and some don’t). Personally this format, though interesting, disturbs me. It takes solace in something sacred to most of us (childhood cartoon format) and transforms it into a violent massacre while keeping the same happy go luck overtones. I prefer violence and horror to be represented in the way Emily Carroll does, with a sense of foreboding and whimsical storytelling. Nevertheless I Can appreciate the writers and animators use of putting these to contrasting ideas together.
